You can get coverage for out-of-network specialists, but MetroPlus, like other insurance providers, have different levels of coverage, based on whether the urology specialist is in-network or out-of-network. For in-network providers, MetroPlus has agreements with specific doctors and practices to offer you lower costs and full benefits. If you decide to see a urologist outside the MetroPlus network, your coverage may depend on your specific MetroPlus plan, such as:
- MetroPlus Medicaid, essential plan and Medicare advantage. These plans usually don’t cover out-of-network care unless it’s an emergency.
- MetroPlus gold. This plan requires in-network providers, but exceptions may be available if you get prior authorization.
- MetroPlus marketplace plans. Some plans may offer partial coverage, but you’ll likely pay higher deductibles and co-payments.
- MetroPlus-partnered facilities. Some urologists aren’t directly in-network, but may work at MetroPlus-affiliated hospitals or clinics, allowing you to get some level of coverage.
MetroPlus may approve an out-of-network urologist if no in-network specialists are available for your specific condition, or you require a highly specialized treatment that isn’t offered within the MetroPlus network. Your PCP must refer you and submit a prior authorization request. If you don’t get prior authorization, you may have to pay the full cost of your specialist visit.
